Box Office Report Card: Bollywood loses approx. Rs. 250 crores in the first quarter of 2020 due to Coronavirus

April 02, 2020

2020 started with a bang and was expected to be the year that Bollywood films would set new benchmarks at the box office. With new markets opening up, trade expectations were that Indian films could see an increase in revenues propelling filmmaking to the next level. However, contrary to expectations the first three months have been rather bleak for the industry, the recent financial crisis with Yes Bank, and the currently on going Coronavirus scare that has sent the nation into a lockdown. In this analysis we take a look at the box office report card of Bollywood to analyse how much the industry has suffered from the current events.

Box Office Report Card: Bollywood loses approx. Rs. 250 crores in the first quarter of 2020 due to Coronavirus

In fact, the first quarter of 2020 has seen Bollywood rake in approximately Rs. 778 cr. with a major chunk of collections coming from the Ajay Devgn starrer Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior that drew in triple digits and Baaghi 3 that fell short of a century due to unseen circumstances. If that wasn’t all, the Coronavirus scare that has put the nation in lockdown also forced the postponement of releases like Sooryavanshi which ideally could have added around Rs. 170 cr. to the total box office tally in the final week of March. The other films to suffer greatly from the Covid-19 pandemic are Baaghi 3 and Angrezi Medium. While the first fell short of the anticipated collections by Rs. 40 cr, the other release Angrezi Medium was affected the most with theatres shutting down, the film that was expected to rake in well over Rs. 30 cr saw just Rs. 9.36 cr coming in.

Shedding light on the first quarter Amod Mehra states that given how tumultuous the year was, it was a rather bleak start. However, he is quick to reaffirm that films cannot be written off totally, while also pointing out that unlike previous years the first three months of 2020 featured very few releases. “If you look at previous years there have been films which featured big star names like Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar and so on, but in 2020 the first quarter saw releases of smaller celebrities so obviously the box office collections would differ.”

Trade Analyst Girish Johar doesn’t mince words when talking about the first quarter of 2020 when he says, “The first quarter has gone for a toss that is evident. As for the second quarter, basis on what the government declares, things will take time to get back on track. In fact, things like getting artist dates, locations, set ups in place will take at least two to three weeks, after the government relaxes the embargo.”

“I had tweeted as well that we have lost around Rs. 400-500 cr. in the first quarter, but that is majorly because of the Corona thing, but an equal contributor is the quality of the content. It is not like a good film has come and the audience has missed out on it. It is the content quality of the films that have come, like Baaghi 3 took a good start but in its second week there was a drastic drop in collections due to content and Corona, even ABCD 3D did decently well but eventually its collections as well dropped”, reasons Johar when detailing what went wrong in the first quarter of 2020.

Echoing a similar view films trade analyst Taran Adarsh too states that the first quarter of 2020 was rather dull, “The first three months of 2020 have been dull, though there were a few films like Tanhaji, Street Dancer 3D and some other films like Thappad that did do business, the first quarter was low key. As for Baaghi 3 while the film did well, its box office run was marred by the Coronavirus pandemic, so yes that as well affected overall business.”

Talking about the future Mehra reserves his comments saying, “Further talking about what is to come Mehra continues, “Right now I cannot say what the future holds, I cannot play God. All we can do is wait and watch and hope that the box office figures pick up.” On the other hand Girish Johar has a reserved yet optimistic outlook when he says, “Right now nothing is happening; only writers and director are at work developing stories for future films so eventually we will see an increase in collections in the coming months”.

Concluding his analysis on the coming months, Taran Adarsh holds a reserved optimism when he says, “When the theatres do open it will be slow at first, since audience will stay away from crowded places due to fear. That movie watching, theatre going culture will have to be cultivated again amongst the audience. So yes the first few months will be slow, but it will pick up.”

Hollywood movies have amassed only Rs. 50 crores at the India box office in the first quarter of 2020

April 01, 2020

The first quarter of 2020 has been a rather tumultuous year not only for the general populace but also for the film industry. With the year starting off with calamities like the Australian fires, earthquakes, threat of a new world war, and more recently the Coronavirus outbreak, theatre going audience have chosen to stay away from cinemas. In this special report we take a look at the first quarter of 2020 analysing how the box office graph has fared in comparison to previous years.

Hollywood movies have amassed only Rs. 50 crores at the India box office in the first quarter of 2020

Given the global scenario in the first three months of 2020, Hollywood releases have severely underperformed at the India box office. In fact, estimates state that the first three months of 2020 witnessed around Rs. 50 cr. coming in from box office collections with the film 1917 and Dolittle generating Rs. 10 cr. each. When compared to previous years, 2019 saw approximately Rs. 125 cr. coming in with Captain Marvel and How To Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World contributing Rs. 85 cr. and Rs. 12 cr. respectively.

On the other hand 2018 was a slow year with approximately Rs. 75 cr. coming in, while 2017 saw Rs. 135 cr. being collected with XXX: Return of Xander Cage and Logan raking in Rs. 31 cr. and Rs. 35.29 cr. respectively.

Reasoning why the first quarter of 2020 has been rather disappointing at the box office, film trade analyst Girish Johar says, “If you look at the releases in 2020 as compared to previous years, the first three months did not feature big ticket releases that would draw in the audience. Films like Fast & Furious 9 which was slated to release have been pushed back due to the Coronavirus pandemic, so of course the first quarter has been bleak.” Further talking about the lacklustre business in the first three months Girish continues, “Also if you see in the little screen time that we have had in the first quarter the films that released did not boast of being high on content, so audiences as well took a decision to avoid patronizing such films. Unlike previous years, 2020 did not have a, what can be said as a highlight release in the first quarter, that eventually becomes a major money-spinner.”

However, though Girish claims that the first quarter of 2020 was bad, he does hold out hope for the coming months. “A number of films have been rescheduled to release later. And once the government clears films to release it might take a few weeks before things get back on track but yes there will be an increase in collections.” However, despite his optimism Johar still maintains a reservation that he explains saying, “Because the release of films were shifted that would mean re-promoting and marketing them, which in turn would increase cost, and not to mention the fight between big releases to capitalize on the prime release dates, and film promotion mediums. So though there will be an increase in collections it will certainly be interesting to watch the coming days.”

Film trade analyst Taran Adarsh too shares a similar point of view saying, “The first three months of 2020 did not feature big ticket releases. And with the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic Hollywood studios took the call to push releases to a later date. This is because today films release globally and in the light of the current scenario everything is shut across the globe, so yes the first quarter of 2020 was low key.” As for what the future holds, Taran claims that while it will be bright, it will also be slow to rake in the number. “When theatres open and films start to release apart from major clashes happening the audience will as well be apprehensive to venture into crowded areas, so business will start on a slow note, but as the months progress there will be an increase.”

However, with the Coronavirus pandemic affecting the world, theatres across the globe have shut down along with a host of other services. Box Office Collections: Angrezi Medium and Baaghi 3 face the heat on Friday

March 14, 2020

Bollywood is facing the heat, and how. Yesterday was the true beginning of the bad times that Bollywood is going to face in weeks to come, what with many states declaring that theaters would be shut for a few weeks to come. The announcement has indeed been disappointing for movie buffs as they would now be missing out on their regular dose of entertainment over the weekend.

Box Office Collections: Angrezi Medium and Baaghi 3 face the heat on Friday

Angrezi Medium is set to bear the maximum brunt as the announcement came on the heels of it being ready to hit the theaters. With the overseas prints already been dispatched, it just didn't have time to roll back the release plan and hence had to arrive as scheduled. Though it was predicted that Rs. 4 crores would come on the opening day, it was before the announcement came in around Delhi theaters being shut down. This was the region that had brought in maximum moolah for Hindi Medium, hence the loss is also maximum here.

The film still managed to bring in Rs. 4.03 crores, which means collections would have been at least Rs. 5 crores had things been normal. Nonetheless, with theaters shutting down in more parts of the country and the content too not quite seeing wholesome appreciation, it is going to be a tough journey ahead for the Irrfan Khan starrer.

As for Baaghi 3, it suffered a major drop on its second Friday. A major contributor towards that was the shutting down of theaters and general health scare. Only Rs. 2 crores* more was added to the total of the film and that has extended the film's collections to Rs. 92.67 crores*. With uncertainty around how many theaters will eventually be screening films in days to come, one waits to see if the Rs. 100 crores mark would be reached this weekend or it would take much longer.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Baaghi 3 Box Office Collections - Baaghi 3 scores in its first week, is a hit for Sajid Nadiadwala, Tiger Shroff, Ahmed Khan

March 13, 2020

Baaghi 3 has emerged as a hit at the box office. The film has seen a solid first week for itself with a total of Rs. 91.97 crores*. The weekdays have stayed good right through with Monday (Rs. 9.06 crores), Wednesday (Rs. 8.03 crores) and Thursday (Rs. 7 crores*) showing good trending despite a superb Tuesday (Rs. 14.05 crores) in between. The footfalls stayed quite consistent and that has brought the film quite close to the Rs. 100 crores mark after the first week.

Baaghi 3 Box Office Collections - Baaghi 3 scores in its first week, is a hit for Sajid Nadiadwala, Tiger Shroff, Ahmed Khan

Of course, the film would have hit a century much earlier if not for the corona virus scare that has engulfed the country, due to which entertainment has taken a back seat. Otherwise, a number in excess of at least Rs. 110 crores would have comfortably come in by now.

Nonetheless, the fact remains that the Sajid Nadiadwala production is making profits for all involved and has turned out to be the most watched film of the year already after Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior. Yes, the profits could have been much higher had theatres been filled optimally with better footfalls. However, it has still managed to at least benefit from a reasonably open first week as from today onwards theatres have started shutting down at number of centres, hence resulting in majority of films moving ahead.

Tiger Shroff has scored yet again with Baaghi 3 and all eyes are on the combo of Sajid, Tiger and director Ahmed Khan to strike again with Heropanti 2 next year.

*Estimates. Final numbers awaited

Box Office Prediction: Irrfan Khan starrer Angrezi Medium set for a decent opening

March 12, 2020

Irrfan Khan and Kareena Kapoor Khan starrer Angrezi Medium is set to take a decent opening at the box office. The film’s promo did arouse curiosity though the promotion had to sustain primarily on that since there wasn’t much to back it up with songs etc. Also, with Irrfan recovering currently and not quite available for active promotion, it all boiled down to the franchise quotient doing the talking.

Box Office Prediction: Irrfan Khan starrer Angrezi Medium set for a decent opening

On its release, Hindi Medium has taken an opening of Rs. 2.81 crores. From there it went on to enjoy a lifetime of Rs. 69.59 crores. Very few Hindi films have managed such a feat, case in point being Kangana Ranaut’s Queen or Vidya Balan’s Kahaani. The film needs to work in totality for such a turnaround, otherwise most rely on some kind of opening at least.

In that aspect, Angrezi Medium is well placed as an opening day number in the vicinity of Rs. 4 crores is on the cards. That would be quite some improvement over the first day collections of Hindi Medium. Though the virus scare means that footfalls would be impacted to some extent at the least, even an opening number like the one predicted should be fair enough to allow the film some sort of a stage and platform to grow further over the weekend.

Baaghi 3 Box Office Collections: Tiger Shroff starrer is doing well, set to enter Rs. 100 Crore Club in the second weekend

March 12, 2020

Baaghi 3 is set to be yet another century in the Baaghi franchise. If Baaghi was a superhit at the box office with solid collections of Rs. 77 crores, Baaghi 2 was a blockbuster as it scored Rs. 166 crores in its lifetime run. Now, Baaghi 3 too would find itself somewhere in between the lifetime numbers of the two films as the collections are turning out to be quite good.

This was evident on Wednesday as well when the film collected Rs. 8.03 crores. Considering the fact that this was a regular day and the fall from Monday collections of Rs.17.50 crores is still just a bit more than 50% (that too on the sixth day), the trending is positive. Today, the film should stay over the Rs. 6 crores mark and once that happens, the Sajid Nadiadwala production would have gone past the Rs. 90 crores mark.

The Tiger Shroff starrer has collected Rs. 84.97 crores so far and while the Rs. 100 crores mark will be hit by Saturday, it has to be seen what’s the kind of distance that it covers eventually. The pace at which it is going currently, lifetime in the vicinity of Rs. 125 crores is a definite possibility. However, it can go further to that as well since majority of biggies in weeks to come are being pushed ahead, which means the Ahmed Khan directed affair would have a field wide open to perform.

Baaghi 3 Box Office Collections Day 5: Baaghi 3 does extremely well on Holi, almost equates Baaghi lifetime in just five days

March 10, 2020

Back in 2016 when Baaghi had released, it had collected Rs. 77 crores in its lifetime. The film was a super hit at the box office and had set the stage for Tiger Shroff to be a bonafide action star. Circa 2020 and now that the young star has managed to establish himself well as a reliable actor with a definite pull at the box office, his newest release Baaghi 3 has almost equated the total of Baaghi in just five days.

The Ahmed Khan directed film has already collected Rs. 76.94 crores after bringing in Rs. 14.05 crores on Tuesday, which means it is quite close to the Rs. 77 crores total of Baaghi 3. The film grew hugely on the festive occasion of Holi and jumped in a major way from 9.06 crores total that it had gathered on Monday. Of course the film is continuing to battle the corona virus scare, which means even though it was a partial holiday of sorts (since majority of theatres opened only post afternoon), there was a huge segment of audiences that chose to stay indoors. If that wasn't the case, the film would have been way past the Rs. 15 crores mark.

Nonetheless, the film is now pacing up well towards the Rs. 100 crores mark and that is there for the taking before the close of second weekend. Once that happens, it would be fourth Rs. 100 Crore Club success in a row for producer Sajid Nadiadwala who scored a hat-trick of centuries last year with Super 30, Chhichhore and Housefull 4.

Interestingly, Tiger Shroff has managed to beat Varun Dhawan with Baaghi 3 that collected Rs. 53.83 cr surpassing the collections of Street Dancer 3D that had collected Rs. 39 cr, to become the second highest opening weekend grosser of 2020. Baaghi 3 Box Office Collections Day 3 - Baaghi 3 does quite well on Sunday, goes past the Rs. 50 crores mark

March 08, 2020

Baaghi 3 came on its own on Sunday as there was good growth evidenced. The film collected Rs. 20.30 crores and this is the first time ever over the weekend that the Rs. 20 crores milestone was crossed. This was the kind of feat that the film was expected to perform from the first day itself but the fact that this has now come on the third day at least is good news indeed.

Baaghi 3 Box Office Collections Day 3 - Baaghi 3 does quite well on Sunday, goes past the Rs. 50 crores mark

What is noticeable is that the jump from Saturday numbers of Rs. 16.03 crores is quite good, which means it can well be expected that Monday hold would be good as well. Tomorrow is the holiday due to the festival of holi and that should help evening and night shows today. If the Tiger Shroff starrer managed to score in double digits today, it would be good indeed.

The Sajid Nadiadwala production currently stands at Rs. 53.83 crores and this is now the second biggest weekend of 2020 after Tanhaji: The Unsung Warrior [Rs. 61.93 crores]. This was also the time when the Ajay Devgn starrer took off in a very major way and hence Baaghi 3 can't be expected to challenge any further records of 2020. That said, the Ahmed Khan directed film is far ahead of Street Dancer 3D that had a weekend of Rs. 41.23 crores. In fact, the collections are just a bit short of the Varun Dhawan film which had collected Rs. 56.77 crores in its entire first week.
